Cuba Knitting

What is that? This is Sonetto Shawl by Judy Marples, what I ultimately ended up knitting while on vacation in Varadaro, Cuba. Although I don’t normally return to a pattern, this is my second go at Sonetto. I made a Sonnetto shawl for my Mom for Christmas a couple of years ago. For her, I went all out and ordered the Wollmeise 100% merino Superwash wool straight outta Germany. The yarn was gorgeous and the shawl is one of my favourite knits I’ve ever made. Sonneto was my first go at lace knitting and my first shawl.

I figured that I might make another Sonetto for myself one day, this time I am using Berroco Ultra Alpaca in the Turquoise Mix colour way. Hmm, and yes I can see the extreme colour shift between images, I took these in slightly different light. The colourway is most closely depicted in the middle photo.

I love all of the uniform bubbles you see in the lace section, of course once blocked these will expand and be flat, but I love the texture of the shawl as it is being knit up.

The mittens are also a work in progress that didn’t get any attention in Cuba. Currently, one done with a thumb that needs some more attention. It was hard to want to knit mittens when I was mostly relaxing on this beach and steadfastly putting out of my mind -30 in Winnipeg.

This was taken on the beach of the resort we were staying at. The vacation was truly relaxing mostly consisting of reading on the beach and knitting on balcony is breezy 30 degree weather.
